The second installment of the Talk Club Cup returned to Ashton Gate last week, raising awareness and tackling stigma surrounding men's mental health, while also generating funds for community support programmes. The city united for the vital cause as teams of Club legends and celebrities from Bristol Rovers and Bristol City went head-to-head in front of more than 3,000 fans. The Robins bested the Rovers legends 4-0, but on the night the result was secondary to the wider purpose of the occasion, with all funds raised to be invested directly back into the community through local initiatives. The match was supported by Bristol Rovers Community Trust, the Bristol City Robins Foundation and Talk Club – a men's mental health charity that focuses on helping men to improve their mental fitness by encouraging conversation and breaking down barriers around seeking help. Speaking after the match, the Chief Executive Officer of Bristol Rovers Community Trust, Adam Tutton, emphasised the importance of the event and its lasting impact. “We were raising funds for the Talk Club Cup, which supports the Talk Club, Bristol Rovers Community Trust and the Robins Foundation. All the funds raised help us put on programmes to tackle issues around mental health across the city. So, it’s really, really important. Every penny that’s raised helps people in this city. “We’re aware that 25 men in Bristol each year take their own lives, and when you think about that, it’s two teams of 11 and the officials. It’s really important for football to try and tackle these issues and do what we can.” Former players and prominent local figures were also in attendance, including Louis Carey, Scott Murray, Seb Choudhury, Gardna, Roni Size and Joe Sims, adding to the occasion and drawing widespread support. However, organisers stressed that the real impact extended far beyond the 90 minutes of football. Throughout the evening, meaningful conversations were taking place among supporters, helping to break down stigma and encourage more men to seek support. Ben Akers and Gavin Thorpe, co-founders and co-CEOs of Talk Club, praised the collective effort behind the event: “We would like to thank all the celebs and legends for making this such a special night. For the team at City and the Robins Foundation for hosting the event and to the Bristol Rovers Community Trust team – especially Adam Tutton for his relentless energy and optimism.” “But this night wasn’t just what was happening on the pitch. It was also the hundreds of conversations our team had with fans, many promising to attend our Talk Club groups at City and Rovers.”
