Bristol Rovers will begin their 2026-27 campaign with a League Cup match against Peterborough United this weekend, but the squad will be without their record signing, Promise Omochere. The 25-year-old forward has been ruled out due to a calf injury sustained during pre-season, with manager Steve Evans expecting him to be sidelined for three to four weeks.

Omochere, signed for a reported £500,000 in 2024, has been a source of frustration for Bristol Rovers. His first season was marred by a series of injuries, including an ankle problem, a broken hand, and a torn hamstring. Matt Taylor, the then-manager, even suggested that Omochere had returned to action too early. A second hamstring injury further sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

In his second season, Omochere continued to struggle with injuries, missing significant time despite a goalscoring return in April 2026. He expressed his frustrations to BRTV, stating, 'I’m feeling really good. Really, really good. Obviously, it has been a difficult few months. Just a difficult time in general. I don’t think people understand how frustrating it is and has been for me. Obviously, coming in with a lot of expectation and feeling like I’d just fallen short. It’s days like today that are the reason why I play football.'

Despite his challenges, Omochere has shown his abilities in other areas, demonstrating his versatility by covering wide areas and holding up the ball. However, his performances have been overshadowed by the injuries he has sustained.

Steve Evans Seeks Forward Options

In pre-season, Steve Evans indicated that Bristol Rovers were still exploring options to strengthen their forward line. Evans stated, 'We’re still looking at midfield, we’re still looking at wider areas and maybe up top, who knows?!' New additions are imminent, and Rovers already have good depth up front. However, with the risk of further injuries, Evans and his team are likely to pursue more forward options to ensure the team's stability.

Omochere's situation remains uncertain, and any hopes of selling him and recouping a portion of the transfer fee are fading. His performance and recovery will be crucial in determining the future of the player at Bristol Rovers.
