Bristol Rovers were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by Wycombe Wanderers in their EFL Trophy Group South match on Tuesday. The heavy defeat at Adams Park extends a poor run of results for the Gas, who sit fifth in League Two with 15 points from nine games.

Wycombe took control early. Malik Mothersille opened the scoring after four minutes, finishing an assist from Cauley Woodrow. Emre Tezgel doubled the lead in the 22nd minute, again set up by Woodrow, who then scored himself eleven minutes later to make it 3-0 before the break.

Bristol Rovers manager Tom Hounsell made a double change at half-time, introducing Ellis Harrison and Shaqai Forde. The changes provided some impetus, and Harrison, the club's top scorer this season with 11 goals in 38 appearances, pulled one back in the 73rd minute. Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny provided the assist.

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished late on, however, as Emre Tezgel netted his second and Wycombe's fourth in the 87th minute. The hosts dominated possession with 62 percent and outshot Rovers 19 to 14. Bristol Rovers received two yellow cards, to Tommy Leigh and Jack Sparkes, while Wycombe's Luke Leahy was also booked.

The result means Bristol Rovers have now lost four of their last five matches in all competitions. They must regroup quickly for a key League Two fixture this Saturday, when they host second-placed Barnet at the Memorial Stadium.
